St Teresa's Catholic Primary School

Our English curriculum enables and encourages children’s reading, writing, oral communication and overall creativity. Pupils are taught to read fluently with accuracy, automaticity and prosody, which in turn develops understanding and comprehension. This leads to and nurtures a desire to read widely and deeply for pleasure and information. Pupils will acquire a wide vocabulary and will apply the key skills of spelling, grammar and punctuation for reading, writing and spoken language. They will write clearly, accurately, coherently and neatly for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.

At St Teresa’s Catholic Primary School we strive for our children to be ‘Primary Literate Pupils’.

By the end of Key Stage 2, we aim for a child to be able to:

  • read and write with confidence, fluency and understanding, orchestrating a range of independent strategies to self-monitor and correct.
  • have an interest in books, and read for enjoyment.
  • have an interest in words, their meanings; developing a growing vocabulary in spoken and written forms.
  • understand a range of text types and genres – be able to write in a variety of styles and forms appropriate to the situation.
  • be developing the powers of imagination, inventiveness and critical awareness.
  • have a suitable technical vocabulary to articulate their responses.
  • adopt appropriate vocabulary, tone, pace and style for a variety of audiences and in a variety of situations.
  • understand the importance of good listening and how to respond during discussions, conversations and when information is given or asked for.
  • write neatly, with a consistent size and style in handwriting
