WELCOME TO YEAR 5!
A warm welcome to Year 5 from Miss Gold and Mrs Keogh!
SAFESIDE VISIT 3rd JULY 2024
We had so much fun on our trip to Safeside! Safeside features an immersive, full-size indoor safety village and provides experiential safety learning for children, young people and adults. It has several scenarios including a bank, house, road, shop, police station and canal. It allows children to learn about real dangers, within a safe and controlled environment. Year 5 were an absolute pleasure to take on this trip - the team at Safeside couldn't compliment them enough on their brilliant behaviour and knowledgeable answers! Thank you to the Safeside team and all the staff involved in helping with this trp.
What is Climate Change?
Year 5 have been fully engaged with their Geography learning so far this term. Climate change refers to the shift in the Earth's usual weather conditions over many years. Our world has been getting hotter due to things humans are doing, like burning huge amounts of fossil fuels, cutting down too many trees and over-farming crops and animals. Watch the video to find out more...
SCIENCE - ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS
Year 5 have been learning about electrical components in Science. A circuit will always have a battery (cell) as well as other components. Components such as bulbs, buzzers, switches and motors, need a battery in order to work. Revise the symbols and watch the video below to consolidate your learning:-
Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple
On Tuesday 11th June, Year 5 went on an informative trip to the Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple. Located in Tividale, the temple is one of the largest functioning Hindu temples in Europe. It is dedicated, in the Vaishnava tradition, to a form of the Hindu god Vishnu. Year 5 enjoyed a tour around the different areas of the temple whilst observing the many colourful and ornate statues. Well done to all of the children for their fantastic behavior, maturity and respect throughout the morning! Please have a look at our photos form the trip below. Click each image to enlarge them!
The Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution was a period of great innovation, with many advancements made that led to technologies that we still use to this day. In many ways, the Industrial Revolution is seen to have begun with the invention of the steam engine by James Watt in 1765. This seemed to kick-start a chain of events that developed into what we now refer to as the Industrial Revolution. After Watt's invention of the steam engine, it was George Stephenson who created the first-ever passenger steam locomotive - something that completely altered how people lived their lives. The progress made over the 100 or so years of the Industrial Revolution not only changed the course of British history but that of the entire world. Our city of Birmingham played a huge part during this time and was once known as, ''the city of a thousand trades.'' Watch the video below to learn more...

Islamic Art Clay Tiles
We have thoroughly enjoyed designing and making our Islamic art inspired clay tiles! We spent time studying and choosing an Islamic style - geometric, vegetal or calligraphy (or all three!) to create a tile linked to our study on the Early Islamic empire. Our designs were made from clay using various tools to create our desired pattern. Once the clay had dried a few days later, we were ready to bring the tiles to life with some colourful paint. Please check out our pictures above.
Space Projects
Well done to Year 5 for their Earth and Space homework projects! The children were given a month to produce a product of their choice linked to our Science unit all about Space. Many created models, PowerPoints, fact files and much more! All of the children gave a 5 minute presentation to the rest of the class, including Miss Gold, Mrs Lal and Mrs Keogh. Please have a look at the 'out of this world' creations above! Fantastic work Year 5.
GEOGRAPHY - Mapping skills.
What is grid referencing? What are contour lines? What do map symbols mean? These were some of the questions that Year 5 answered in today's Geography lesson linked to their UK hills and mountains unit. The children were given the opportunity to explore Ordnance Survey maps for the Malvern Hills, Snowdonia National Park and Ben Nevis. They gained an understanding of map symbols, land use (agricultural /urban), location skills and topography. Have a look at the photos below and watch the videos to help to understand 4 figure and 6 figure grid referencing:-

World Book Day 2024
Thursday March 7th was World Book Day and all of the children at St Teresa’s had lots of fun dressing up as their favourite book character. In year 5, we had a happy Hobbit, a cheeky Charlie (and the chocolate factory), a lovely little red riding hood, a cool Katate Kid, a brave boy (in the striped pyjamas) and a few helpful Harry Potter’s (when their magic wands worked) to name but a few! A great effort from all in Year 5!
Geography - UK hills and mountains
We have been learning about the topography of the UK landscape in our Geography lessons this term. So far, we have used maps and atlases to locate mountainous regions, including some rather well known mountains from each UK country:-
Mount Snowdon in Wales
Ben Nevis in Scotland
Scafell Pike in England
Slieve Donard in. Or there Ireland
Please watch the video to learn more about the UK landscape:-

SAFER INTERNET DAY
Tuesday, 6 February 2024 is Safer Internet Day. This special celebration takes place in February of each year to raise awareness of a safer and better internet for all, and especially for children and young people. As part of this annual celebration, it is encouraged that everyone - including children and young people, parents and caregivers, teachers and educators and many more, join "Together for a better internet".
In Year 5, we explored our 'digital footprint'. Children were given an outline image of a foot and recorded all the various ways they use the internet, whether for information or entertainment purposes. Pupils then gauged a rough idea as to how long they spent on the internet per week and what we could do lessen the use of online resources. Year 5 came up with lots of super ideas, such as 'digital detoxing, time limits, using other sources of entertainment through books and board games and much more.
We also spoke about how we can be safe online and what we can do when faced with a tricky or worrying online situation. Year 5 will cover internet safety again in more comprehensive detail when begin our RHE (Relationship and Health Education) sessions, of which, part of these sessions are dedicated to online safety awareness. Well done Year 5 for engaging enthusiastically with Safer Internet Day!
Negative numbers
Year 5 have begun learning about negative numbers (week commencing 5th February). A negative number is a number whose value is always less than zero and it has a minus (-) sign before it. On a number line, negative numbers are shown to the left of zero. For example, - 2, - 3, - 4, - 5 are called negative numbers. Please watch the video to support you with your learning Year 5.

SPRING TERM OVERVIEW
Please look at the overview below for the Spring term:-
Bread tasting - Design Technology
On Tuesday 12th December, Year 5 carried out a bread tasting session as part of their Design and Technology unit. The children were very responsible by adhering to food hygiene standards and approached the activity with curiosity and maturity. They tasted a variety of different breads, commenting on their appearance, aroma, taste and value. Some children enjoyed tasting all breads - some not so sure - a second taste was needed to confirm analysis! Please have a look at our photos below:-
Journalist / Witness Role-play.
The children in year 5 are preparing for their independent writing task this week (WC 11th Dec 2023) - a newspaper report based on the events of WWII. A key feature used in a newspaper report are quotes from persons linked to the event. Year 5 enjoyed a role-play activity, whereby they had the opportunity to play the part of a war correspondent, then a witness to key events of The Blitz. We then used the quotes given by the witness to create direct speech sentences for a newspaper article. Please have a look at the photos below - click on each one to enlarge.
GEOGRAPHY - THE WORLD
Year 5 are showing curiosity for the world in our Geography lessons this term. They have located the worlds seven continents and five oceans, as well as locating the countries involved in WWII. The children have enjoyed using the atlases to build their understanding of compass points, climate and lines of Latitude and Longitude. Latitude and longitude are imaginary lines that run North-South and East-West around the world. The most important line of latitude is the equator, which is along the middle of the Earth splitting it into two hemispheres. Please watch the videos below:-
Class Prayer and Liturgy
Every week, children are invited to plan, prepare and lead Class Prayer and Liturgy. The children are supported with their planning and given opportunities to think about how we will Gather, Listen. Respond and Go Forth. Thank you to Joey and Kenyah for leading this week's Class Prayer and Liturgy, linked to our Catholic Social Teaching; The Dignity of the Human Person. They both spoke eloquently about respecting one another, regardless of our background, gender, ethnicity or faith.
